On the occasion of the Environment Day of today 5 June, we publish a selection of books for boys and girls on the theme of recycling and responsible consumption. We increasingly need new generations and green kids who are attentive to the environment, nature and planet Earth.
This selection of books for children between 4 and 10 years made by Lo Stivaletto can be a good starting point for those who want to read funny stories and/or introduce notions “techniques” on how to be more responsible towards the environment and the world.
Enjoy reading these green books for eco-minded kids, and, why not, parents! 😉
- 365 penguins / Jean-Luc Fromental, Joelle Jolivet, Milan : The children beaver, 2006
On the first day of the year, at nine in the morning, the bell rings. He's a delivery man. I open the package and find a penguin. Who sent this strange gift? The next day, a new visit from the delivery man and a new penguin is delivered to the home of the protagonist's family. What will the package delivered on the third day contain? Another penguin! At the end of the month there are 31 penguins, by the summer more than 200. The problems multiply: how do you feed everyone? How do you take care of a penguin? How do you deal with neighbors who start complaining? Only at the end of the year and at the 365th penguin will it be discovered who is behind these strange and cumbersome shipments! But another year is upon us: what will be in the big package that arrives again on January 1st?

- The secret of boiled potatoes / Cecco Mariniello, New land, 2018
With a nice and funny language, “The secret of Boiled Potato” explains the importance of correctly differentiating waste. It is Boiled Potato that makes Mino and Mirella, the two children protagonists of the story, discover that a bag of waste can be transformed into precious compost, useful for the growth and nourishment of new seedlings. Is this the “secret” of Patata Lessa: the care of the environment and the protection of the planet are in our hands. It's our small daily gestures that make the difference.

- Stop it, Recycling! How to cultivate ecological habits and fight climate change / Agnese Baruzzi, Belvedere Marittimo: Cuddles and boogers, 2008
The health of our planet is at risk: we all know it. But to respect the environment, a few simple daily actions are enough: so easy that even a child can put them into practice effortlessly. Just like recycling which, thanks to the mysterious termite Lupo, learns to fight global warming without being a superhero!

- Separate collection in small steps / Gérard Bertolini and Claire Delalande; illustrations by Nicolas Hubesch, Giunti, 2019
Nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is transformed. Every year we produce two billion tons of household waste on earth. At the current rate, between now and 2050, global waste generation will be multiplied by four! What can be done to slow down this growth and preserve the future of the planet, when the life span of a plastic bag is 450 years, and that of a glass bottle is 4,000 years? Developing laws and measures that favor the collection, sorting, recycling and appropriate disposal of waste is the commitment of governments. On an individual level: learning to control consumption, to comply with sorting rules and to reuse rather than simply throw away to love the world around us.

- Refuse / text by Antonio Ferrara ; illustrations by Cinzia and Valentina: Biella : Lineadaria, 2010
A book? Sure, too. But above all an ambitious bet, a work born from a daring interweaving of signs, languages and gazes. A scientific, social and poetic story with a strong intention of dissemination and awareness. A tender and tenacious Call to the Arts. An approach that moves from different and sensitive angles, from different privileged observers: research, social responsibility, writing, illustration. One small big goal: taking care of the worldLO STIVALETTO evaluates: Reading age, from 10 years. VOTE – LO
